Who Is Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski?
Born on January 14, 1770, Adam Jerzy Czartoryski was a Polish statesman and politician. He was a significant figure during Poland’s political upheavals in the 18th and 19th centuries, especially known for his struggle for Poland’s independence.
His Role in Founding Polonezköy
In 1841, Czartoryski established the Eastern Mission Base Agency in Istanbul. This agency aimed to provide sanctuary and a new homeland for Poles. As a result of his efforts, a Polish colony was founded near Istanbul in 1842. In his honor, the settlement was named “Adampol”, which over time became known as Polonezköy.
